SUMMARY

In 2 Samuel 5, all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron, recognizing his leadership and God’s anointing, and asked him to be their king (v. 1-5). This fulfills God’s promise, as David didn’t beg for the position but was sought out from all the tribes of Israel, due to his faithful service. He fully depended on God even during Saul’s reign. David was anointed king over all Israel at age 30, and reigned for 40 years. He captures Jerusalem from the Jebusites, establishing it as his capital (v. 6-10). With God’s guidance, David grows stronger, building a palace with help from Hiram of Tyre (v. 11-12). He expands his family in Jerusalem (v. 13-16) and defeats the Philistines twice, seeking God’s direction each time (v. 17-25). David’s victories show his reliance on God before and after challenges.

Note…

  1. The tribes came to David, affirming his testimony of faithfulness while serving under Saul, fighting for Israel as if he were already king.

2. David continually sought God, not only in times of trouble but also after solutions were found, modeling a consistent relationship with God.

3. Instead of scheming or taking shortcuts to fulfill God’s promise, David depended on God alone, teaching us to trust God’s timing and plan.

We should seek God not just in crises or trials but, maintain that relationship within the times without trouble also. Like David, we must avoid human tendencies to rely on our own schemes or ways of thinking and instead depend fully on God to fulfill His promises.

If we allow God to lead us, the outcome of His leadership will go exceedingly beyond our wildest thoughts, dreams and imaginations. Through this leadership God didn't just make David king but he also restored Israel and Judah as one nation.

REFLECTION & PRAYER

In reflecting on David's journey in 2 Samuel 5 and his reliance on God's timing, guidance, and promises rather than his own strength, we are reminded to approach our own challenges with the same trust. Have you tried to solve that problem yourself in your own way or fully depending on your logical reasoning to sort it out? Instead, let us turn to prayer:

Lord Jesus, I trust in Your ways and leadership. Please lead me, and help guide me moment by moment, step by step, and give me patience in waiting for Your timing, oh Lord. I trust that You will bring to pass every promise, in Jesus' Name, Amen.
