1 Kings 2, as David nears death, he delivers his final words to Solomon, emphasizing spiritual and character strength over mere biological masculinity. He urges Solomon to "be strong and act like a man" (v. 2), as you know, this is beyond physical attributes… we must embody spiritual fortitude and integrity. David, nearing death, charges Solomon with a powerful exhortation to “be strong and show yourself a man”. This call transcends mere biological masculinity. It’s a summon to spiritual and character strength, rooted in godliness. David instructs Solomon to observe God’s requirements, walk in obedience, and keep His decrees, commands, laws, and regulations as outlined in the Law of Moses (v. 3). This spiritual discipline, David stresses, ensures prosperity and the continuation of God’s promise that David’s descendants will remain on the throne (v. 4).
Brothers and sisters, true strength comes from spiritual growth, not just physical prowess. While physical exercise has some value, spiritual “exercise”—rooted in God’s Word yields eternal benefits (cf. 1 Timothy 4:8). Many men may grow physically strong but remain spiritually weak, lacking the fortitude to stand firm in faith. David’s charge is not only for Solomon but for his descendants, urging a legacy of spiritual strength passed down through generations. As the Bible teaches that physical training profits little, but godliness benefits all things (1 Timothy 4:8) you see our world today does not see the secret handed over to us. Everyone is busy building their physical body to gain attention, some of good health, other for social media posts and so on and so forth but the question we must ask ourselves is:
How can we cultivate spiritual strength in your daily life to stand firm in God’s truth, as Solomon did?
Are there areas where we prioritize physical or emotional desires over spiritual obedience? How do we discern between emotional manipulation and God’s will in your decisions?
Child of God How can we realign our focus tell me? And What legacy of faith are we building for future generations as David encouraged Solomon to do tell me child of God?
Because at the end of the day, the physical will fade away, only the spirit remains forever. David also addresses unfinished business, instructing Solomon to deal wisely with specific individuals. He urges Solomon to show kindness to the sons of Barzillai, who supported David during Absalom’s rebellion (v. 7). Conversely, he advises Solomon to hold accountable Joab, who committed murder (v. 5–6), and Shimei, who cursed David (v. 8–9). David’s death follows, marking the end of his 40-year reign (v. 10–12). Adonijah, Solomon’s older brother who previously attempted to usurp the throne (1 Kings 1), approaches Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother, with a deceptive request to marry Abishag, David’s concubine (v. 13–17). This request, though might look innocent, was a veiled attempt to challenge Solomon’s kingship, as claiming a king’s concubine could signal a claim to the throne. Solomon, demonstrating spiritual discernment and strength, recognizes the deception. Rather than succumbing to emotional manipulation through his mother, he stands firm, refusing Adonijah’s request and ordering his execution (v. 22–25).
Solomon’s commitment to godly leadership, prioritizing truth over sentimentality. Some of our brothers and sisters are so weak because they don't stand by the truth, instead they stand by religion. If it was in our world today, you will have people saying obey your father and mother and just give your older brother the woman he desires, or better still just do it for your mom since you promised already to give whatever she asked for. Not standing by the truth and solidifying your stance in the truth makes you weak. Child of God, Solomon, demonstrated spiritual discernment and strength, by recognizing Adonijah’s deceptive intent. Rather than yielding to emotional manipulation, he stood firm, refusing the request and ordering Adonijah’s execution.
You see brothers and sisters, decisions like this reflect the spiritual maturity David urged, as Solomon prioritizes God’s truth over familial pressure. You don't get that from the gym- no, you don't. It comes only by spiritual workout!!!! Many grow physically strong but remain spiritually weak, lacking the power to resist deception or uphold righteousness. Solomon further solidifies his rule by addressing other threats. He removes Abiathar the priest, who supported Adonijah, from office, fulfilling God’s judgment against Eli’s house (v. 26–27). Joab, learning of Adonijah’s fate, flees to the altar for refuge but is executed for his past crimes (v. 28–34). Solomon appoints Benaiah as commander and Zadok as priest, ensuring loyal leadership (v. 35). Finally, Solomon deals with Shimei, who violates a conditional pardon by leaving Jerusalem, resulting in his execution (v. 36–46). These actions establish Solomon’s kingdom, he resolves to uphold justice and remove opposition, as David advised.
Child of God a man’s strength lies not in physical might but in spiritual maturity, cultivated through adherence to God’s Word. While the world often equates masculinity with physical attributes, the Bible prioritizes spiritual fortitude, which governs all aspects of life.
